This course focuses on the therapist’s responsibility when providing services for a Medicare B beneficiary: To design a program that facilitates carryover from gains made in therapy to maintenance and continued improvement in a home living environment. In that vein, the lecture discusses the point in treatment of a patient in long-term care at which a home exercise program or restorative nursing recommendations should be established. The professor also explains how to document medical necessity of interventions in order to ensure reimbursement, as well as when restorative nursing recommendations would help qualify residents for the “Rehab Low” category in a skilled nursing facility. Finally, the lecture discusses the key components required to establish a restorative nursing program for patients in a long-term care facility.

This program takes the form of a home exercise program for independent patients, and may be a restorative nursing or functional maintenance program for those living in a skilled nursing facility (SNF).

Goals & Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. List the therapist’s responsibilities when providing services for Medicare B beneficiaries for carryover from gains made in therapy.
  2. Identify at what point in time during treatment of a patient in LTC to establish a home exercise program or restorative nursing recommendations with documentation.
  3. Identify the five components needed to document medical necessity of the intervention with a resident to ensure reimbursement.
  4. Identify two key programs under which a restorative nursing recommendation should be made to help qualify a resident for the “Rehab Low” category in a skilled nursing facility (SNF).
  5. List the four components necessary to establish a restorative nursing program (RNP) for patients in a LTC facility.
